We are a few weeks into NFL free agency. While most of the big names have already put pen to paper, a handful of intriguing dominos still have to fall. As for what is coming up on the horizon in the league, the 2023 NFL Draft will be here before you know it. Nothing breeds optimism into all 32 NFL fanbases quite like the allure of the NFL Draft. This year, it will take place in Kansas City.

NFL rumors: Competition Committee won’t make roughing the passer reviewable
The owners will be having their annual NFL meeting here soon. As per usual, there will be several potential rule changes discussed, and possibly implemented, by the Competition Committee. One such rule that is on the table is making controversial roughing the passer penalties reviewable. While that sounds like a decent idea, it does not seem like it will be getting enough votes this time.
While it is imperative to protect the league’s star quarterbacks because the product can be unwatchable at times with even a good backup filling it, some of these roughing the passer penalties have gotten out of hand. Edge rushers have a tough job to do already, but the shield has made it considerably harder for them over the last decade or so. Will the calls ever be reviewable?
I think the owners are apprehensive to giving this the okay for one reason: How poorly received making pass interference calls reviewable was a few years back. At their core, these are both judgement calls, so it is better to put the blame on the officials, rather than figuring out how to make them better. Eventually, these referees need to be full-time employees to stop this crapola.
Making roughing the passer penalties reviewable feels like a reactive issue to a deeper problem.
