After a stunning loss to the New York Giants on Sunday, it’s safe to say Russell Wilson is out of MVP contention.
In quite arguably the biggest upset of the 2020 season, the Colt McCoy-led New York Giants did the unthinkable on Sunday afternoon, traveling across the country and taking down the Seattle Seahawks and Russell Wilson. In the defeat, Wilson once again struggled, finishing with two turnovers.
With Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers taking down the Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs downing the Broncos behind the arm of Patrick Mahomes, Week 13 made one this particularly clear: Wilson is no longer in the MVP running.
Russell Wilson has played himself out of the MVP conversation
In the 17-12 loss to the Giants, Wilson faced a ton of pressure from New York’s defensive line throughout the contest. Leonard Williams looked like a man possessed for the Giants, making life difficult for Wilson and the Seahawks’ offensive linemen.
The Seattle offense as a whole just looked sluggish. Plain and simple, losing at home to the Giants was inexcusable for Pete Carroll and company, with Wilson also deserving plenty of blame. He continues to cough the ball up.
While his interception was on a deflected pass that should have been caught by Chris Carson, his lost fumble came when he botched the snap and instead of diving on the ball, he tried to get cute and gain some yards. It was an awful play that only got worse with Wilson’s poor decision.
The Seahawks claimed it was just ‘one of those days’ for the offense, but that can’t happen against a team that entered Sunday’s matchup at 4-7. Wilson is considered one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, but he didn’t even come close to living up to that hype against the G-Men.
Seattle has Super Bowl hopes this season. If they want to go on a magical playoff run, Wilson has to play better. Period.
