Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores knows that defending the Kansas City Chiefs will be a difficult task this week.
Since being hired by the Miami Dolphins last year, head coach Brian Flores has put the team on an upward trajectory. Following their 19-7 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, the Dolphins have an 8-4 record on the year and are just a game behind the Buffalo Bills for first place in the AFC East. With a playoff berth in sight, the Dolphins face a difficult task in Week 14, as they have to face the high-powered Kansas City Chiefs offense.
When asked how he’s preparing his team to contain the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce and more, Flores jokingly said he wishes he were allowed to throw 14 defenders on the field.
Flores provides a brutally honest assessment of what it will take to stop the Chiefs
You have to respect Flores for being honest. Stopping the Chiefs is a task too tall for many teams to handle. The only way to truly get the best of Kansas City is to outscore them on offense. That’s what the Las Vegas Raiders did earlier this season, and it might have to be the strategy Flores implements heading into this weekend.
Through 12 games this season, the Dolphins have allowed 355.2 yards of total offense per game (16th in NFL) and impressively surrendered an average of 17.7 points per game (second-fewest in league). When it comes to stopping the opposing quarterback, the Dolphins have allowed a league-low 14 passing touchdowns while recording 13 interceptions.
The problem is that the Chiefs offense is too much. Kansas City has averaged a league-high 427.6 yards of total offense and the second-most points per game (30.8). Besides the three aforementioned stars, the Chiefs also have Le’Veon Bell, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Mecole Hardman and Sammy Watkins.
Miami not only has the chance to improve its playoff odds, but it could potentially hand the Chiefs their second-loss of the season in the process. It won’t be easy, but it’s definitely a possibility.
