Some breaking news has dropped out of Pittsburgh — the Steelers reportedly won’t bring back offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner.
After the Steelers closed the season in horrendous fashion, highlighted by the Wild Card Round loss to the Cleveland Browns, you just knew some coaching changes would be on the way.
Mike Tomlin has wasted no time in shaking things up on his staff. NFL insider Tom Pelissero is reporting that offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner won’t be returning to Heinz Field next season.
Steelers fans are rejoicing that Randy Fichtner won’t be back to call the plays on offense
Fichtner has been with the organization since 2007, first joining the team as a wide receivers coach. He continued to work his way up and took over as offensive coordinator in 2018. This past season, while the Steelers looked great to start the year, things could not have gone much worse to close things out.
Pittsburgh went 1-4 to end the regular season and then they got upset at home by the Browns during the Wild Card Round. Ben Roethlisberger, JuJu Smith-Schuster and others were seen walking off the field in tears. It was heartbreaking to see.
Offensively, the Steelers lost their mojo and Roethlisberger was tough to watch at times. Fichtner received plenty of the blame for his play-calling, and now Pittsburgh supporters are pretty darn fired up he won’t be back next season. His contract expires in March, bringing to an end a run of more than 14 years in Pittsburgh.
Now, the hunt for a new offensive coordinator will begin for Tomlin, and the organization will look to make a splash hire after such a disappointing end to this season. It goes without saying, but fans can’t wait to see who comes in next to help the team out.
