Charlie Strong will join Urban Meyer on the Jacksonville Jaguars coaching staff.
Former South Florida Bulls head coach Charlie Strong only needed one year of the Nick Saban coaching rehabilitation program to get back on his feet, as he will join his former mentor Urban Meyer on the Jacksonville Jaguars staff.
Like Meyer, Strong has a ton of coaching experience, but only at the college level. He previously worked for Meyer at Florida from 2005 to 2009. Strong would leave Gainesville in 2010 to go to lead the Louisville Cardinals (2010-13), the Texas Longhorns (2014-16) and South Florida (2017-19) before ending up in Tuscaloosa. He is expected to be Meyer’s linebackers coach in Jacksonville.
How Urban Meyer assembles his Jacksonville Jaguars staff will be everything
There are several advantages to hiring a coach as successful as Meyer. He has won everywhere he has been and has turned around all four programs quickly (Bowling Green, Utah, Florida, Ohio State). Meyer is great at identifying talent and getting the most out of the talent while in charge. However, he never stays anywhere for long and will have to adjust to coaching full-grown men.
What is paramount for Meyer is him being able to hire a pair of former NFL head coaches to be his offensive and defensive coordinators. This will help him acclimate to coaching professional ball faster. He should have no issues being able to draft at a high level, given his nearness to the college game. By him adding Strong, it will does the Jaguars a bit of a good college vibe to them.
Strong used a national championship season at Alabama to his advantage to join Meyer in Duval.
