Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson isn’t shying away from trade interest.
As Watson himself stated just yesterday, he went from a 2 to a 10. We presume he meant the anger scale.
The Texans didn’t take their franchise signal-caller into account when making major changes to the coaching staff and front office. While the days of old would’ve seen Watson sticking to issues within the locker room, rather than those technically above him, the NFL has transformed into a player-friendly league. Watson realizes this, and he’s not thrilled he was kept out of the loop on who will be leading the team for the majority of his competitive window.
Watson is in his prime, and he feels he’s wasting it in Houston
Who are we to argue? Just a year ago this week, Watson and the Texans held a 20-point lead over the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round of the playoffs. We know what’s happened since then, as Patrick Mahomes and Co. stormed back on their way to winning the AFC and the Super Bowl.
Bill O’Brien opted to trade Watson’s favorite target, DeAndre Hopkins, as a discounted price. Midseason, O’Brien himself was shown the door after that move and others backfired in record timing.
The Texans are a mess, and the aspect of playing in San Francisco suddenly isn’t so foreign.
The Niners would have to give up a ton of assets for Watson, but it could very well be worth it to pair one of the best young quarterbacks in the league with Kyle Shanahan’s scheme. Such a group would be terrifying for the NFC West, and perhaps reign supreme in the conference for years to come assuming the 49ers have the financial means to build around Watson long-term.
But perhaps the most appetizing part of all of this for Watson is that — at least from the outside looking in — the 49ers front office seems to have it together. Meanwhile, the Texans remain a raging dumpster fire.
Argument over.
