Brandon Staley will be the next head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.
Brandon Staley is going from one locker room at SoFi Stadium to another, as the Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator will become the next head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.
The head-coaching vacancies are quickly disappearing, as Staley will be either the fourth or fifth new head coach hired in this offseason cycle. New Orleans Saints tight ends coach Dan Campbell is expected to be the next head coach of the Detroit Lions. Only the Houston Texans and the Philadelphia Eagles have head-coaching vacancies left to fill at this point in the NFL offseason.
Will Brandon Staley be the head coach to get the most out of Justin Herbert?
Staley had been linked to a few head-coaching jobs this offseason, but he seemed to have come out of nowhere to get the Chargers job in the 11th hour. Many people thought Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll was destined to lead the Bolts. However, the Bills moved on to the AFC Championship game, while Staley’s former employer bowed out on Saturday evening.
Besides not having to move, the best part about coaching the Chargers for Staley is that he gets to coach quarterback Justin Herbert in his prime. Though Staley is a defensive-minded head coach, why would anybody not want to pair themselves with a quarterbacking talent as obvious as Herbert? Together, they might be the first Los Angeles team to win a Super Bowl, not the Rams.
Staley’s departure to the Chargers creates an interesting wrinkle in the Battle of Los Angeles.
