The Packers don’t need to make massive roster changes to reach Super Bowl 56, but they do need to make these three key offseason moves.
Green Bay fans are still suffering from the bitter disappointment of Sunday’s home loss to the Buccaneers. The higher-ups inside the Packers organization can’t afford to linger on the sobering defeat. Instead, they need to immediately turn their collective attention towards strengthening the roster for a run at Super Bowl LVI.
The franchise’s first priority must be to keep Aaron Rodgers in the fold. He may claim that his future with the Packers is “uncertain” at the moment, but that is likely just posturing from the Hall-of-Fame quarterback. What he really wants is for his front office to go out and make some win-now moves this offseason.
If the Packers do want to give Rodgers another shot at Super Bowl glory they need to engage in some aggressive moves this offseason. Starting with the following three moves would get Green Bay off to a quality start.
3. Let Kevin King leave in free agency
King’s performance against the Buccaneers was an abject disaster. It wasn’t just that his final pass interference play effectively ended his team’s season. Time and time again he was targeted by Tampa Bay no matter who he lined up against in coverage.
The cornerback’s timing for a high-profile meltdown was exceedingly poor. He’s headed for free agency. Before his debacle against Tampa Bay it’s conceivable he could have convinced the Packers to pay up to keep him around for the long haul.
Now it’s clear they need to let him go and shop for an upgrade through either the draft or free agency. King and the Packers both need a fresh start.
