Trevor Lawrence won’t be at Clemson’s Pro Day after all.
It’s tough to blame Lawrence, who is undoubtedly the top prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft. In all likelihood, he’ll be a Jacksonville Jaguar barring a stunning last-minute trade. With that in mind, why would Lawrence risk injury or bad press at Clemson’s Pro Day?
The former Tigers quarterback has very little to gain in performing for NFL teams, but per Ian Rapoport, he “will throw for NFL teams on Feb. 12 instead of participating in Clemson’s pro day next month, per agents MGC Sports. Throwing early will allow him to have a newly discovered injury to his left (non-throwing) shoulder labrum repaired.”
Lawrence’s ailment, which previously wasn’t reported, shouldn’t impact his overall draft status.
Trevor Lawrence has been a guaranteed No. 1 pick since his freshman year
Lawrence and Clemson won the National Championship in his freshman season, and while they failed to reach those heights again in his following two campaigns, it’s tough to blame No. 16 for that fate. Lawrence balled out in all three years as a Tiger, to the tune of 90 touchdowns and just 17 interceptions.
If there’s any possibility of Lawrence worsening his injury in the coming months, he should avoid throwing altogether and merely participate in any team interviews via video-call. The idea that any team would need to see one of the most talented quarterback prospects in recent memory throw the football to solidify their decision is absurd. If Lawrence isn’t the first name off the board come April, someone is getting fired.
Lawrence’s injury occurring on his non-throwing arm is promising in comparison to the alternative, however. Hopefully the best QB prospect since Andrew Luck recovers in ample time for April’s showcase.
