The sports world makes for a beautiful palette but individual images can get lost in the constant shuffle. Here are the best Getty Images sports photos from this week.
Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers celebrate winning Super Bowl LV against the Kansas City Chiefs at Raymond James Stadium on Feb. 7, 2021, in Tampa, Florida.
I remember shooting The Match: Champions for Charity golf tournament with Tom Brady right after he had signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and I was already excited. It was incredible watching the team grow from training camp all the way through the season, despite the skepticism around Brady’s capabilities with a new team. When the Buccaneers beat the Green Bay Packers on the road to be the first team to host a Super Bowl in their home stadium, I knew it was going to be different from any other Super Bowl or game I’ve covered. Traditionally, Getty Images would have a team of 10-11 photographers shooting the game, but this year we could only have three due to COVID-19 protocols. We worked really hard to communicate to make sure we could cover as much of the game as possible with limited numbers and mobility. In the end, our hard work paid off. This image captures the result of the journey Brady and Rob Gronkowski went on together this season, which you could tell was pure joy. They worked hard all season and really believed in each other, so to watch that come to fruition was an incredible, unforgettable moment for me.

Anri Kawamura of Japan takes a training run for the Women’s Moguls during the 2021 Intermountain Healthcare Freestyle International Ski World Cup at Deer Valley Resort on Feb. 2, 2021, in Park City, Utah.
I made this image of Anri Kawamura of Japan during training for the Women’s Moguls at the Freestyle International Ski World Cup at Deer Valley Resort. The mogul course at Deer Valley consists of a 28-degree slope that runs close to 900-feet downhill and has two kicker jumps where athletes must perform aerial tricks while racing through the moguls. For the shot of Anri, I positioned a remote camera under the downhill side of the second kicker jump. I fired the camera as Anri skied off the jump to capture her twisting through the air. By combining the unique camera angle with the pattern of the clouds, blue sky and dynamic body position, I was able to capture an eye-catching moment that highlights what these athletes can do.

Chris Kreider of the New York Rangers falls over Tuukka Rask of the Boston Bruins during the third period at Madison Square Garden on Feb. 10, 2021, in New York City.
From my position at the far end of the ice, about 190-feet away, I have a fairly head-on view of the hockey net and goaltender at the other end of the ice. Of course, the question always is exactly when to pull the trigger as you could have ten bodies floating in front of the goaltender at any microsecond of time. And the fact is that even with shooting at twelve frames a second, this may not save you as your autofocus can pop out and grab another player if you’re not careful. In this case, a clear pipe to the other end opened, and Chris Kreider of the New York Rangers obliged by somewhat slowly tumbling over Tuukka Rask of the Boston Bruins. This provided me with a nice sequence of six images to choose from, from this action-packed moment.
