If the Chiefs want to reclaim their Super Bowl title they need to have a productive 2021 NFL Draft. Here’s how Kansas City can do just that.

Chiefs fans might still be suffering from a Super Bowl hangover, but the team’s front office doesn’t have that luxury. They are already hard at work formulating plans for how they can overcome Tampa Bay next season. A big part of that formula is mining the 2021 NFL Draft for talent.

Don’t look for the Chiefs’ personnel decision-makers to overreact to the loss to the Buccaneers. They understand their offensive line failed to protect Patrick Mahomes in the biggest game of the season. They also understand that neither of their projected starters at tackle played a snap in the Super Bowl.

Instead, they’ll look to fill the needs they identified over the course of the full season. That means the Chiefs will be looking for help at edge rusher, in the secondary, and on the offensive line at various points in this year’s draft. Look for Kansas City to target a guard capable of serving as an immediate starter in Round 1.

Wyatt Davis

Offensive guard Ohio State

Drafting a guard in the first round doesn’t qualify as a sexy transaction, but Kansas City has a profound need to upgrade the interior of their offensive line. Davis projects as a player who can help keep Mahomes upright immediately.

His biggest strength is that he can absolutely maul opposing defensive lineman in the run game. Davis is a massive human being who generates a lot of power for a man with his kind of size. It might take him some time to learn how to make an impact blocking at the second level, but he’s capable of helping Kansas City win the battle at the line of scrimmage right away. Davis might be a boring selection but he’s a guy who can help the Chiefs win.
