The Pittsburgh Steelers partnered with Giant Eagle Pharmacies to turn Heinz Field into a COVID-19 vaccination site.
Production of COVID-19 vaccinations are beginning to ramp up in the United States with the hope that vaccines will be available for everyone by the summer. So far, professional sports teams like the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Mets have opened up their respective stadiums as mass vaccination sites.
On Friday, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced that they are teaming with Giant Eagles Pharmacies to turn Heinz Field into a vaccination site starting on March 2 and running through March 5.
“The Steelers have had a long relationship, a long partnership, with Giant Eagle going back decades now, and so when Giant Eagle Pharmacy wanted to set up a vaccination site at Heinz Field we thought it was a great idea,” said Steelers President Art Rooney II, via the team’s official website. “A great opportunity to really help them serve the community, and so we’re excited it’s going to happen.”
Heinz Field will administer vaccines throughout the week
While appointments are confirmed to be available for the remainder of the week, Rooney expects there to be additional days where the stadium to be used throughout the month of March, but it will all depend on Giant Eagle’s supply of the vaccine.
Heinz Field will be administering the Pfizer vaccine, which is only available to individuals who fall into Phase 1A of Pennsylvania’s vaccine rollout. Those qualified persons include healthcare workers, individuals over the age of 65 and those between the ages of 16 and 64 who have high-risk health conditions. Appointments can be made via GiantEagle.com. As of this writing, however, all appointments have been filled.
For those who were able to schedule their appointment, parking will be made available at Gold Lot 1 and the vaccinations will be administered at PNC Champions Club inside the stadium. Masks and facial coverings are required for entry. Individuals need to bring photo identification and medical insurance information. Appointments for the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine will take place 21 days after receiving the first dose.
