Tony Finau was surprised by none other than Tom Brady during a rain delay at The Masters.
During a lengthy weather delay in Round 3 of the 2021 Masters on Saturday afternoon, Tony Finau was surprised to see who wanted to FaceTime with him: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady.
As Finau was waiting for the rain to stop outside the caddie house at Augusta National, club member Jimmy Dunne handed Finau his cell phone with Brady ready for a FaceTime.
“That was a pleasant surprise,” Finau told ESPN. “He said, ‘Great playing,’ and he was following. He was surprised we stopped. He said in the NFL when it rains you don’t stop. I let him know, ‘Yeah, maybe we’re not as tough as you guys,’ but he said, ‘No, that’s not the case.’ We had a good laugh about that.”
Tony Finau has crossed paths with Tom Brady once before in recent years
While we are not sure what conversation Brady had with Finau, we do know that these two professional athletes have met before back when Brady was a member of the 2017 New England Patriots. Though Finau says he grew up a fan of the Dallas Cowboys, he chooses to root for individual players these days, as opposed to NFL teams. This makes all the sense in the world.
Overall, Finau is probably not going to win the 2021 Masters after shooting over par on Saturday. He trailed leader Hideki Matsuyama by eight strokes heading into the final round on Sunday. What gets lost sometimes is that professional athletes are sports fans in general. For Brady to want to FaceTime you in the middle of the most important tournament of the year, that speaks volumes.
When Brady wants to FaceTime with you, you pick up the phone and enjoy the conversation.
