The Dallas Cowboys could cut these three veterans because of the talent they brought in in the 2021 NFL Draft.
The Dallas Cowboys failed to live up to their lofty expectations last season, but were in playoff contention until the final week. Even so, the main thing that held them back was their defense. It certainly made it harder for the Cowboys offense to keep up with the defense failing to stop the opposition.
Following the NFL Draft, the Cowboys added 11 prospects to their roster, eight of which coming on the defensive side of the ball. With that influx of talent arriving in Dallas, that means some veterans could be on the chopping block before the start of the 2021 season. Here are three players who could end up being cut by the Cowboys.
3.
Deante Burton
CB Dallas Cowboys
As many expected, losing star cornerback Byron Jones to the Miami Dolphins came back to haunt the Cowboys. They did draft Trevon Diggs and Reggie Robinson II. While the Cowboys pass defense did not give up much yardage through the air, they did surrender the third-most passing touchdowns in the league (34).
This year, the Cowboys continued to add to their cornerback depth chart by selecting Kentucky’s Kelvin Joseph in the second round and Oregon State’s Nahshon Wright in the third. With these prospects vying for starting time, that means someone on the depth chart will fall off. Out of the options, Deante Burton could be the most in danger.
Burton was an undrafted free agent out of Kansas State signed by the Atlanta Falcons in 2017. He spent a over a year with the NFC South squad before he moved onto the Green Bay Packers, the Falcons again, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts before sticking on with the Cowboys in 2019. In his two years with the Cowboys, Burton tallied three combined tackles in seven games.
Considering the amount of players in the cornerback’s room, It may be hard for Burton to stay in Dallas.
