Tim Tebow’s rumored NFL return is becoming a reality as the Jacksonville Jaguars are reportedly prepared to sign the quarterback-turned-tight-end prospect.
The Jaguars are really doing it.
Urban Meyer is bringing Tim Tebow back to the NFL.
Tebow is on the verge of signing a one-year deal with Jacksonville as a tight end, according to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. The deal could be completed in the next week.
“Nothing done yet,” Rapoport tweeted. “But he’ll have a chance to make the team to reunite with his mentor and college head coach Urban Meyer.”
Tebow played for Meyer at Florida. They won a national championship together. Funnily enough, their lives have followed a similarly unpredictable pattern.
Tim Tebow finally gave in to the tight end possibility
Meyer left coaching, then returned to Ohio State, then left coaching again. He got a studio job as an analyst, then made the leap to the NFL with the Jaguars.
Tebow tried to prove himself as a quarterback in the NFL, playing for the Broncos and Jets. When his opportunities as a passer dried up, he went into broadcasting. Then he tried his hand at professional baseball, joining the Mets organization. He retired from baseball earlier this year. Then came the reports that he was considering a return to the NFL as a tight end.
When he first came out of college, many wondered if tight end would be a better long-term position for him in the pros. However, he resisted swapping over.
The draw of playing football again is apparently enough for him to take the chance. And Meyer’s connection in Jacksonville is enough for them to give him that opportunity.
This will be an interesting experiment to watch. He’s 33 years old and doesn’t have meaningful experience playing tight end. He’ll be starting from scratch.
