Thanks to updated states when it comes to sacks in the NFL, two Pittsburgh Steelers legends have now moved into the Top 5 on the team’s all-time list.
Massive news has dropped this week thanks to the folks over at Pro Football Reference. They really go above and beyond with their work, and they’ve done so this summer with an update when it comes to sacks.
Sacks weren’t made official until 1982, but researchers have broken things down dating back to 1960. Now, while these stats are considered unofficial, two Pittsburgh Steelers greats have now moved into the Top 5 on the team’s all-time list: Joe Greene and L.C. Greenwood.
Joe Greene and L.C. Greenwood are now among the Top 5 sack artists in Steelers history
Both Greene and Greenwood are of course known as being absolute beasts for Pittsburgh. The two were members of the feared ‘Steel Curtain Defense’ which still gives chills to the opposition. With the updated sack numbers, Greenwood is No. 2 on Pittsburgh list with 78 sacks, while Greene is right behind him in third place with 77.5 sacks.
Again, these stats are unofficial, but it showcases just how legendary these players were for the Steelers. To record 78 and 77.5 sacks, respectively, is simply unreal. The fact that they weren’t honored for their amazing work until now is a bit of a bummer.
Thanks to these researchers, though, folks can now fully appreciate what both these two were able to accomplish during their unbelievable playing days in the Steel City. James Harrison is still at the top of things with his 80.5 sacks, while Jason Gildon (77) and Joey Porter (60) round out the top five.
For Greene and Greenwood, being in this company must be one heck of an honor. It’s been a long time coming for them.
