Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew is taking his competition with Trevor Lawrence to the extreme with a pre-season superstition.
Sports superstitions can take some strange forms. Gardner Minshew’s is up there with the weirdest and funniest of them.
Locked in competition with top draft pick Trevor Lawrence, Minshew has his eyes set on the No. 1 spot on the depth chart. He’s got no interest in being QB2.
“In preparation for the competition, I haven’t take a s–t in weeks. No. 2 isn’t an option for me,” Minshew joked on the Green Light with Chris Long podcast.
Gardner Minshew is so focused on being QB1, he’s not taking No. 2s
Minshew is among the best characters in the NFL. So leave it to him to drop that line.
Minshew also complimented Lawrence’s golden locks while talking about a shampoo specific for his mullet on the podcast appearance.
The Jaguars drafted Minshew out of Washington State in 2019 in the sixth round. He surprisingly started 12 games as a rookie, finishing with a 6-6 record while throwing 3,271 yards and 21 touchdowns. Jacksonville struggled mightily in 2020 as Minshew went 1-7. He dealt with a thumb fracture midway through the season while Jake Luton and Mike Glennon took his place.
It’s clear that Lawrence is the future for the Jaguars. They drafted the Clemson national title winner No. 1 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. It’s not a question of if he’ll start for them, but when.
Still, Minshew could win the job this offseason and keep Lawrence from starting right away. The Jaguars have a lot of work to do, even with Lawrence in the fold.
Refusing to go No. 1 probably isn’t the key to pulling off that upset, but it all comes down to whatever works for Minshew. He’ll continue to be entertaining, either way.
