David Culley says quarterback Deshaun Watson has to earn reps on his Houston Texans roster.
While he may have been trolling here, Houston Texans fans cannot like what their new head coach David Culley said at the podium about the team’s best player in franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson.
Though he may have a myriad of legal troubles that could prevent him from seeing the field this year, Culley referring to Watson as a scout team quarterback/running back/safety is just a bad look. This may be Culley’s first year as an NFL head coach, but the 65-year-old long-time assistant has a great shot of going one-and-done leading arguably the worst team in the league this year.
When Watson does play under center, he is an unquestioned, top-eight quarterback in the league.
Houston Texans HC David Culley trolls his QB Deshaun Watson at the podium
There are a few teams who could end up with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, but the Texans have to be at the very top of the list. They would have picked third last spring had former head coach/general manager Bill O’Brien not dealt their pick to the Miami Dolphins for offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil. Look for Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler to lead Houston next year.
Overall, Houston had arguably the worst offseason of any team in the league. The greatest player in franchise history in defensive end J.J. Watt now plays for the Arizona Cardinals. Watson may not play another down in the NFL with his mounting legal issues. Houston hired a head coach in Culley who feels like a placeholder at best. It would be shocking if Houston finished any better than 4-13.
Culley might be keeping it light-hearted at the podium, but the Watson dig did not land well at all.
