The Kansas City Chiefs will have some tough decisions to make before the season starts, but these three players should make it through roster cuts.
Football is a tough business and the Chiefs know it. They made it to the Super Bowl last season but fell short. Anything less than a title this campaign will be another disappointment.
That means every roster battle should be fierce with no room for sentimentality. Every spot has to be earned.
These three players met that standard with their performance in Kansas City’s second preseason game against the Cardinals.
3 Chiefs who clinched a roster spot in the second preseason game
Tight end Jody Fortson
Jody Fortson has spent the last two years on the Chiefs’ practice squad. Twice he’s been waived in the preseason. Twice he’s come back hoping to make the cut. This time it looks like his wish will be granted.
A big part of his road to making the roster was a position change. Last fall, he transitioned from wide receiver to tight end. It was clear he had the pass-catching chops to make an impact. This August, his task was to prove he could be a strong blocker as well.
Against the Cardinals, he had just one catch for six yards. Where he stood out was in his snaps as a blocker, making an impact on pass and run plays. He’s well on his way to justifying his place.
