Mac Jones joins Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa as the third former Alabama football star quarterback to get the starting nod in NFL Week 1.
With Mac Jones winning the New England Patriots job, he joins Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa as the third former Alabama football star quarterback to lead his team out of the tunnel in NFL Week 1.
Jones will make his first NFL start at home vs. Tagovailoa’s Miami Dolphins on Sept. 12. Tagovailoa enters the 2021 campaign as the Dolphins starter, as does Hurts with the Philadelphia Eagles. While this has to make their former Alabama head coach Nick Saban so proud, it is even crazier that Hurts, Jones and Tagovailoa were all in the same Crimson Tide quarterback room.

Mac Jones becomes third Alabama football star quarterback to start NFL Week 1
What is perhaps the most peculiar about Jones getting the starting nod in New England is the Patriots are undoubtedly his team now. They just released former NFL MVP Cam Newton. Though Hurts and Tagovailoa are the starters for their respective teams, this feels like a one-year trial run in Philadelphia for Hurts. As for Tagovailoa, 2021 is a massive prove-it year for the lefty.
When it comes to who will have the most success this year, that is likely either going to be Jones or Tagovailoa, simply because of the teams they play on. Philadelphia projects as a bottom-four team in the NFL. Though Miami and New England are not favored to win the AFC East this season, it would not be the least bit shocking to see either the Dolphins or the Patriots make the playoffs.
Having three Alabama quarterbacks starting Week 1 is almost as cool as having three in Canton.
