Just after Marshon Lattimore signed a huge extension, the Saints now have to deal with a new injury to their star cornerback.
Celebrations of Marshon Lattimore’s contract extension might have to be more muted than you’d expect.
The Saints cornerback is dealing with an injury he picked up in New Orleans Week 1 victory over Green Bay.
“Per source, Saints CB Marshon Lattimore suffered a thumb injury during Sunday’s win over the Packers. He’ll have surgery to repair it,” Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk tweeted.
Marshon Lattimore injury: Saints cornerback to have thumb surgery
The big question now is how long Lattimore will be impacted by the thumb problem.
Ian Rapoport responded to Florio’s report by calling Lattimore’s status “week-to-week” from here on out.
As a defender, it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for him to play through it with a cast or some other protection for further injury. Pain management could be the biggest hurdle.
His ability to grab interceptions would be hindered, but that’s not the full force of his value to New Orleans. He’s a three-time Pro Bowler because of his exceptional skills in all the other facets of being a corner.
Still, it’s a blow to the Saints knowing Lattimore isn’t 100 percent. He was already dealing with a knee injury going into Week 1. Picking up another knock is not what anyone needed.
Lattimore’s long-term future is settled thanks to the five-year deal that got settled on Sunday. His short-term is going to be harder to figure out.
