Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw his first career September interception at an inopportune time against the Baltimore Ravens.
Before Sunday night, Patrick Mahomes had never thrown an interception in the month of September.
The Ravens changed that when Tavon Young took advantage of a terrible decision by the Chiefs quarterback.
Patrick Mahomes’ first career September interceptions was avoidable
Mahomes was being brought down just behind the line of scrimmage when he tried to toss the ball to Travis Kelce. It found its way into the arms of a defender instead.
The boneheaded mistake cost the Chiefs. The Ravens got the ball around midfield and went on to score on the ensuing drive.
Andy Reid definitely would have preferred being able to pin Baltimore back with a punt there. The turnover helped make it a one-score game once again.
As bad as it was for Mahomes, we should take a second to appreciate the incredible September run he’s had. He had played 11 career games in the ninth month of the year without throwing a single pick. He’s thrown 38 touchdowns, more than any other month of the year.
The Chiefs are like the reverse Giants, always starting the campaign strong with Mahomes at the helm.
Unsurprisingly given his penchant for protecting the ball in the first month of the season, Mahomes also came into Sunday’s game against the Ravens with an unblemished 11-0 record in September.
He’ll have to hope that pick didn’t set up the ending of that other impressive streak.
