Trey Lance takes over at quarterback for 49ers after Jimmy Garoppolo injury

The San Francisco 49ers opened the second half against the Seahawks with Trey Lance at quarterback after Jimmy Garoppolo suffered an injury.

There may be a changing of the guard at quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers.

Rookie quarterback Trey Lance took over to start the second half against the Seahawks.

Trey Lance took over for Jimmy Garoppolo because of an injury

According to Adam Schefter, Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a calf injury, prompting the 49ers to plug in Lance. He is questionable to return but the severity of the problem remains unknown.

San Francisco fans may have wanted to see Lance take over on merit, but he has a huge opportunity to take the reins and prove to the coaching staff he’s the man to lead the offense going forward.

Garoppolo had 165 yards and a touchdown in the first half. He also threw an interception.

The 49ers drafted Lance with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Despite the hype coming out of North Dakota State, the team has been reluctant to give him the keys to the car with Garoppolo starting over him.

He hasn’t held a simple backup role though. Head coach Kyle Shanahan set up a package for him as a different kind of weapon for defenses to account for. Going into the Seattle game, he made two appearances, scoring a passing touchdown against the Lions in Week 2 and rushing for a score against the Packers last week.

All the while, everyone from fans to media wondered when he would finally get the chance to play full time.

Even as he took over for Garoppolo, it looked clear Shanahan wasn’t eager to open things up for him. He attempted just two passes in his first two drives running the show.
