The Jacksonville Jaguars have released a statement on head coach Urban Meyer amidst firing rumors.
Over the weekend, a scandalous video emerged of Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer. The video shows him dancing provocatively with a young woman at a bar while his wife and kids were nowhere to be seen.
Other images circulated on social media shortly after that added to Meyer’s bad look and soon enough there were thousands of responses painting the head coach in quite an unfavorable light.
The day following the video’s circulation, Meyer apologized to his team and admitted to the press that his actions were “stupid.”
Rumors of Meyer’s firing starting heating up relentlessly after the incident, but a statement released by the Jaguars today might cool them down again.
Jaguars owner: Urban Meyer must regain trust, confidence after inexcusable behavior
“I have addressed this matter with Urban,” Jaguars owner Shad Khan said in a statement. “Specifics of our conversation will be held in confidence,” Khan said in a statement. “What I will say is his conduct last weekend was inexcusable. I appreciate Urban’s remorse, which I believe is sincere. Now, he must regain our trust and respect. That will require a personal commitment from Urban to everyone who supports, represents or plays for our team. I am confident he will deliver.”
It sounds like Jacksonville wants to give Meyer another chance. The 0-4 coach has been far from exemplary on the field, and now he’s added a personal controversy to his first few weeks in the NFL. Surely Jacksonville can’t have that much hope for him to make a dramatic improvement, can they?
It is possible that this statement is just buying the Jaguars time as they look for Meyer’s replacement. Multiple NFL sources have speculated that he would be fired in the coming days, and it may just take one more loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday to get Jacksonville ownership to change their tune on Meyer.
The Jaguars have lost 19 straight games.
