Carson Wentz seemed like he was turning things around lately for the Colts but a hilarious and awful interception against the 49ers would say differently.
Over the past few weeks, it looked as if the Indianapolis Colts’ investment in Carson Wentz might actually be paying off. Over a 2-1 stretch for the team, Wentz had thrown six touchdowns with no interceptions while simply looking like a quality quarterback. The hope is that would continue on Sunday Night Football against the 49ers, despite rainy and nasty conditions.
Spoiler alert: It did not continue.
On the first play of the second quarter, the Colts were deep in the red zone and close to punching it in. Nick Bosa, however, beat Eric Fisher on the edge and got a hold of Wentz and was dragging the quarterback to the ground.
Rather than just eating the sack in the messy conditions, Wentz tried to make a wild hero play. Instead, he essentially threw a shovel pass right into the arms of 49ers linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair:
Old (bad) habits die hard, even in a new home, for Carson Wentz
Aside from just how hilarious of a play that was to watch from Carson Wentz — some interceptions are just funnier than others — it also speaks to why the Eagles were ready to part with the quarterback.
Despite his obvious talent, Wentz has a penchant for trying to play the aforementioned hero ball and, as a result, making horrid mistakes that are simultaneously humorous and appalling. This definitely falls in that camp.
Crazy enough, it’s not even the only time this season that he’s tried a shovel pass that no NFL quarterback in their right mind would attempt.
Maybe more of the good Carson Wentz is coming but, as of now, it looks like Colts fans are still going to have to take the bad with it.
