As if things weren’t looking bad enough for the Kansas City Chiefs already, their upcoming schedule could leave them well below .500 after moving to 4-4.
No bones about it, the Kansas City Chiefs won ugly at home against the Giants on Monday Night Football to cap off Week 8. Patrick Mahomes committed more turnovers, the defense only stepped up when Daniel Jones gifted them opportunities, and the play-calling remained head-scratching (just to name a few problems).
At the end of the day, though, the Chiefs moved to 4-4 on the season and, in terms of the standings, kept themselves in the mix to potentially make a run at a playoff spot.
However, the play on the field doesn’t tell the story of a team turning things around. And when you pair that with the upcoming schedule for Kansas City, Andy Reid’s club could be in serious trouble if they don’t remedy at least some of their multitude of problems right now.
Chiefs remaining schedule is brutal to start and doesn’t ever get easy
After beating New York, the Chiefs now have to run a gauntlet of teams who are all sitting at first place in their respective divisions after eight weeks.
Next week, they’ll welcome the 7-1 Green Bay Packers to Arrowhead Stadium. The week after that, they travel to Las Vegas for a primetime date with the 5-2 Raiders. And before the bye, the are at home again but get another tough draw with the surging 6-1 Dallas Cowboys on the docket.
If the Chiefs play as they did against the Giants, they are going into the bye week at 4-7 on the season. Those upcoming opponents are all playing terrific football right now and have shown few signs of letting up — especially with a chance to make a statement against Mahomes and Kansas City at hand.
And in case you thought things eased up after the bye, that’s not the case. KC has the most difficult remaining schedule of any team in the league from this point forward.
There is a lot of work and soul-searching needed for the Chiefs to fix what’s wrong with them right now because, frankly, it’s not just one thing that’s going awry. But if they don’t pinpoint and mend the cracks in the armor right now, this season is heading into a tailspin fast and there’s nothing they can do about it.
