San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle spoke to FanSided’s Mark Carman about rumors linking the team to Aaron Rodgers.
The San Francisco 49ers went on a magical run in the playoffs, which saw them defeat the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers to reach the NFC Championship Game, where they ultimately lost 20-17 to the rival Los Angeles Rams. They have an important offseason when it comes to the quarterback position, as the NFL world awaits to see whether Jimmy Garoppolo stays or goes, allowing Trey Lance to become QB1. But as has been the case, there are always going to be rumors linking the 49ers to a quarterback on the trading block and free agency.
Tight end George Kittle spoke with FanSided’s Mark Carman and was asked about rumors regarding Aaron Rodgers joining the team. Let’s just say that Kittle had some fun when responding.
George Kittle has fun with the 49ers-Aaron Rodgers rumors
“Someone told me Tom Brady was going to the Niners,” joked Kittle, starting at the 8:30 mark of the video linked above. “The last two years with the quarterback stuff in the offseason has been wild, so I’m just going to be on Twitter and wait for a notification to come by that says something happens. If it’s not that, it is what it is.”
This season, the Packers looked like they were destined to clinch a spot in Super Bowl LVI, considering Rodgers played at a level that earned him the fourth NFL MVP award of his career. Yet, the 49ers held Green Bay’s offense to just 10 points in their Divisional Round matchup, earning the 13-10 win on a walk-off field goal by Robbie Gould. As a result, Rodgers fell to 0-4 in the playoffs against San Francisco.
Now, there is uncertainty regarding Rodgers’ status with the Packers. After the loss, Rodgers said he will take time to make his decision, which he reiterated at the 2022 NFL Honors this past Thursday. Until his decision becomes official, the rumors are going to fly.
As for the 49ers, they do have Lance, who they selected with the third-overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft after trading significant draft capital. Kittle spoke about Lance, saying that he is thrilled about his progression.
“Trey has all the intangibles and all the attributes,” said Kittle, at the 7:37 mark in the video linked above . “He has the opportunity to be a very, very good quarterback, so I’m excited about that. I think he can make any throw throughout the field. When you have a guy that can run and leave the pocket, you have the chance for all of those off-schedule plays, which you get such big chunk yardage of out that…
I think the best thing he has though, he’s confident and he loves the game of football. I think he also knows he has to get a lot better. I don’t think he’s anywhere near his ceiling, I don’t think he’s even close. But he is a very good quarterback already…
Whatever the 49ers decide to do at quarterback this offseason, Kittle let it be known that he is very excited about Lance’s potential in the NFL.
Kittle spoke to FanSided on behalf of Flip the Turf — a movement urging the 16 teams who play on artificial turf today to make the switch to natural grass. If any of them say yes, Pennington (a leading grass seed player) will bring the grass, gratis.
