Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes oddly silent on Tyreek Hill trade so far

At least publicly, Patrick Mahomes is making the Kansas City Chiefs’ front office sweat over their decision to trade star wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

Perhaps the Chiefs have a greater plan in place that Mahomes is aware of, but to say virtually nothing about losing his greatest weapon is, in itself, an odd look to say the least.

Mahomes has been plenty active on social media the last few days, which makes it all the more strange he hasn’t said anything about Hill leaving the team. The two teamed up for two AFC Championships and a Super Bowl win — that’s not nothing. Whether Mahomes is upset with his former teammate for demanding a contract the Chiefs couldn’t afford, thus forcing a trade, or with his team for trading away his favorite weapon, remains to be seen.

Chiefs: Is a Patrick Mahomes tribute to Tyreek Hill coming?

Eventually, Mahomes will speak on losing Hill, and he is likely to do so gracefully. Mahomes is used to the media spotlight, and it makes some sense he would let the dust settle before taking that same spotlight away from Hill after his trade to the Dolphins.

The Chiefs landed a trade package which included five draft picks, including a late first-round selection in this year’s NFL Draft. Shortly thereafter, Kansas City signed Marquez Valdes-Scantling, formerly of the Green Bay Packers, which Mahomes commented on via Twitter.

Even without Hill, the Chiefs have a bonafide top-10 offense in the NFL. Travis Kelce, Mecole Hardman, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Valdes-Scantling and surely more to come makes for an explosive receiving corps. Add in a solid offensive line and capable running game, and the Chiefs have plenty to work with.

But voluntarily getting rid of a generational talent like Hill takes some gall. At just 28 years old, all Hill wanted was to get paid. Brett Veach refused, and this is the end result.
