Patrick Mahomes breaks silence on Tyreek Hill trade

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes finally breaks his silence on the Tyreek Hill trade, which he knew about throughout the entire trade process.

Out of respect for their face of the franchise, the Kansas City Chiefs have ensured that Patrick Mahomes is clued into the biggest decisions that affect his team.

So when the team was looking for a trade partner to deal away one of Mahomes’ ultimate receiving weapons in Tyreek Hill, Mahomes knew all about it. Recently, he opened up to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer about his perspective on the Hill trade.

“It more surprised me whenever it got to the point where we were really considering trading him,” Mahomes told SI. “They kept me updated the entire time; I knew the extension talks were going on. And then I knew when he got the permission to seek to get traded. But I mean, still, I played my entire career with Tyreek, so definitely, there was a little bit of shock when he got traded.”

“At the same time, they kept me involved the entire process, and I know that we made a tremendous effort to try to keep him in Kansas City. Tyreek, he’s such a tremendous player, he got what he deserved. I’m happy for him. And he’s at a place where he has a home and he’s closer to family and stuff. So I’m very happy for him. We had to move forward.”

“We had to move on and try to get as much as we could for him and try to build that receiving room again,” he continued. “And do it to where we have the ability to go out there and compete every single week, which I trust Brett Veach and Coach [Andy] Reid will do.”

Mahomes’ thoughts illustrate that just as fanbases need time to collect their thoughts on major team decisions, so do the players who are affected by them the most. Aaron Rodgers didn’t issue a public statement immediately after Davante Adams left for the Raiders, but as Mahomes demonstrates, that doesn’t mean he isn’t thinking about how this affects his team and how they will move forward.

The Chiefs have already tried to compensate for the loss of Hill by signing former Packers receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, which is a move that Mahomes made clear he favors. One positive takeaway from all of this is that the Chiefs respect Mahomes and key him in on big decisions, which allows for the stellar quarterback to surround himself with the best team possible.
