A 911 call from Richard Sherman’s wife, Ashely, reveals details just prior to his arrest in which he was drunk and suicidal.
Free-agent cornerback Richard Sherman was arrested on suspicion of burglary domestic violence after he was arrested at his wife’s parents’ residence in Seattle, Washington early on Wednesday.
A 911 call made by Sherman’s wife, Ashley, shows her explain to a dispatcher, the former-49er was intoxicated and threatened to kill himself while engaging in physical contact with relatives.
For starters, it’s pretty amazing how combative that 911 dispatcher was being in a state of emergency. You would think she would have been better prepared and experienced in dealing with callers who would understandably be worried in a situation like this one. The dispatcher’s responses were ignorant, and it’s something hopefully no one else on the other end of calls like that have to go through.
Regardless, it should go without saying the details from the Sherman-911 call go beyond football.
“My husband is drunk and belligerent and threatened to kill himself,” Sherman’s wife told the 911 dispatcher. “He’s being aggressive, he’s trying to leave the house…he’s sending text messages to people saying he’s going to hang himself.”
The NFL recently launched a series of videos in support of Mental Health Awareness this past May. Among the NFL personnel speaking up on the importance of this topic is former fullback Michael Robinson.
A 911 call reveals details in the Richard Sherman arrest
Robinson spent four seasons in Seattle, and was teammates with Sherman from 2011-2013.
“I hope to reach some of the older people that say young people are being punks or being soft for expressing their feelings,” Robinson said. “I hope to address that old culture of what being a man is. I grew up in that culture, and it created some trauma in my life. I’m learning from my kids how to open up. I’m learning how to talk to my wife about things. It’s such a macho environment. I have to be tough. I’m invincible, nothing can break me down. That same person who appears to be invincible could be crying at night but scared to talk about it.”
Whatever Sherman is going through, hopefully he gets the support needed to overcome the battles he is facing.
