Tyrann Mathieu sent out a tweet potentially directed towards the Kansas City Chiefs following news of Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adam’s contract extension.
The safety market in the NFL was officially set on Tuesday when the Seattle Seahawks agreed to terms with Jamal Adams on a four-year, $70 million contract extension. With that, those who play the same position as Adams now have their asking price in contract negotiations.
Tyrann Mathieu caught wind of Adams’ new contract on Twitter on Monday afternoon. After Tod Palmer of the “4th and 1 podcast” tweeted out that that deal could be relevant in the Kansas City Chiefs‘ contract negotiations with Mathieu, he responded in a tweet that read “the disrespect is noted.”

Mathieu is due for a new contract after this upcoming season, where he is set to earn $14.5 million in base salary. If the Chiefs were to let him walk, Mathieu would no doubt cash in on a huge payday, given that he is one of the top safeties in the NFL today. But Mathieu walking is not in the Chiefs’ plans.

Mathieu is coming off a 2020 campaign where he recorded 62 total tackles (three for loss), nine defended passes and a career-high six interceptions. Through his first two seasons with the Chiefs, Mathieu recorded 137 combined tackles, 21 defended passes and 10 defended passes.
With Adams under contract with the Seahawks through the 2025 season, all eyes will now be on when or if the Chiefs and Mathieu can reach an agreement on a long-term extension.
