The Kansas City Chiefs, until their dethroned, are the best team in the AFC. They’re also the betting favorite to win the Super Bowl this year, after getting better this offseason. Some analysts even think they could go undefeated.

The Chiefs will play their second preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals Friday night. For some guys, their performance will make or break their chances to earn a 53-man roster spot with the third preseason game unlikely to mean a lot . Other guys may have sealed a roster spot with their showing in the preseason opener, but it might be nice for those players to keep their momentum going.

Here are three veterans the Chiefs could cut before the preason is over.

3. RB Darwin Thompson

While Jerick McKinnon looked healthy and productive in every facet, Thompson had four carries for 12 yards in the preseason opener against San Francisco. Thompson is competing with McKinnon, Darrel Williams and Elijiah McGuire for spots behind Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Against the 49ers, McGuire had a 22-yard reception to start making his case to stick around.

Beyond what he does with it, Thompson’s playing time volume will be worth watching on Friday night. If he’s down the pecking order and does not stand out, he may not make it to the next cutdown day.
