Packers: What latest Aaron Rodgers rumors mean for Jordan Love

Could Aaron Rodgers actually stay with the Green Bay Packers, thus pushing back Jordan Love’s wait time even more?

The latest rumors surrounding Aaron Rodgers and the Packers suggest the Green Bay front office is willing to do everything in its power to sway No. 12 back to Lambeau Field to end his career. However much money that takes, Brian Gutekunst and Matt LaFleur do not care.

While that’s all fine and good for Rodgers, what does it mean for the supposed future of the franchise, former Packers first-round pick Jordan Love?

Love was selected out of Utah State in 2020 to be the heir-apparent to Rodgers. Needless to say, Rodgers wasn’t all too happy about that arrangement in similar fashion to Brett Favre in 2005. Yet, instead of trading away Rodgers, at least for now the Packers remain committed to him in part because of his back-to-back MVP campaigns.

Rodgers sounds no signs of slowing down.

Aaron Rodgers rumors: What does this mean for Jordan Love?

The Packers have plenty of options with Love.

First, they could keep him on the roster as a valuable backup quarterback in case Rodgers gets hurt. Rodgers is 38 years old at the moment, and quarterbacks tend to become more fragile as they age. This means Love could get some valuable time as starter even if he’s not technically the starting quarterback.

Second, they could trade Love, rather than wait around the pick up his fifth-year option. Love is still on a rookie deal and given he’s a relative unknown, his trade value could be decent for a player of his stature. Plenty of teams need quarterbacks, and in a relatively weak QB draft class, Love might be more valuable than using a first-rounder on any of Malik Willis, Kenny Pickett, Matt Corral or Sam Howell.

Third and finally, Love could force the Packers’ hand. He doesn’t have much leeway at the moment with Rodgers as the back-to-back MVP, but at the very least he could force his way out of Green Bay if he wants a real starting opportunity.
