The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won’t need to worry about the franchise tag and Chris Godwin going forward after signing the WR to a new three-year deal.
Chris Godwin is ready to roll with the Bucs for the next three years of his career.
On Wednesday, Tampa Bay agreed to sign the wide receiver to a three-year deal worth $60 million, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
The contract comes with $40 million guaranteed at signing, which makes his contract comparable to the one Amari Cooper got from the Cowboys.
Buccaneers sign Chris Godwin to three-year contract
Godwin has had two 1,000-yard showings in his last three seasons.
Under the franchise tag last year, he made just under $16 million. Under the tag again this year he was due $19 million.
The deal he just signed is worth $20 million per year, making him one of the top five highest-paid receivers in the game. However, it’s structure will also help Tampa Bay lower his salary cap hit.
With Tom Brady deciding to unretire, the Bucs are trying to keep the gang together in 2022. Godwin thrived with Brady throwing the ball his way, but even before the Hall of Famer’s arrival, he was already showing signs of becoming a star pass catcher. Godwin was an All-Star in 2019.
The Bucs drafted Godwin out of Penn State in 2017. The third-round selection has more than paid off with 4,643 yards and 29 touchdowns over the last five years.
At 26 and coming off his second career 1,000-yard campaign, the team can expect big things from Godwin during the course of this contract.
