Cowboys: Replacing Randy Gregory might be a two-man job

The Dallas Cowboys lost Randy Gregory to the Denver Broncos in free agency. Replacing him may be a two-player job.

The Dallas Cowboys thought they agreed to terms with in-house pass rusher Randy Gregory to return on a five-year, $70 million contract. However, Gregory had a change of heart and opted to take the same deal from the Denver Broncos due to the contract language. As for how the Cowboys will replace Gregory, there may have a two-man plan.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler tweeted out on Sunday that the team already agreed to terms with former Atlanta Falcons edge rusher Dante Fowler Jr., and that the Cowboys have interest in Jason Pierre-Paul, formerly of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Giants.

Cowboys rumors: Jason Pierre-Paul could join Dante Fowler as new additions

This past week, the Cowboys reached an agreement with Fowler on a one-year contract worth about $5 million. Fowler has a familiarity with Dallas’ defense under coordinator Dan Quinn since he signed on with the Falcons in 2020 when Quinn was head coach.

Back in 2019, Fowler had a career-high 11.5 sacks in 16 games with the Los Angeles Rams. However, Fowler was only able to get a total of 7.5 sacks in 28 games with Atlanta. But given the presence of Micah Parsons and Demarcus Lawrence, Fowler could thrive in Dallas.

Dallas knows all too well about Pierre-Paul, as he brought back some bad memories when he was a member of the Giants. Most notably, his blocked potential game-tying field goal in a game during the 2011 season, the very year in which New York won its fourth Super Bowl. Despite that, Pierre-Paul has been consistent over the years at rushing the passer.

In his career, Pierre-Paul recorded 603 combined tackles, 164 quarterback hits, 122 tackles for loss, 93.5 sacks, 21 forced fumbles and 10 fumble recoveries.

The Cowboys already have Fowler on the roster, but it will remain to be seen if they will sign Pierre-Paul, who had shoulder surgery this offseason.
