Julio Jones isn’t going to get the contract he wants

Julio Jones has elected to hold out of training camp in a contract dispute with the Atlanta Falcons. But after inking a five-year, $71.5 million extension is 2015, it’s a new deal for Jones isn’t likely.

Julio Jones has shown over the past few seasons that he’s one of the best offensive players in the NFL. The Atlanta Falcons inked Jones with a five-year, $71.5 million extension in 2015 and their investment on Jones has paid off: 4,724 yards, 17 touchdowns and 307 catches in the last three seasons. But Jones is seeking a bigger contract from the Falcons and has elected to hold out until the contract matter is resolved.

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones will not report to camp Thursday because he wants his contract reworked, league sources told ESPN’s Chris Mortensen. The Falcons are aware of Jones’ plans and hope he changes his mind, per sources. Jones could be fined up to $40,000 for each day he misses. The Falcons’ first practice is Friday. The team has previously said that it will not rework his deal.

Per Over The Cap.com, Jones is currently the fourth highest-paid receiver in the NFL in terms of overall contract gross, but eighth in terms of the amount of money paid per season. But because Jones is only in his fourth season of the five-year deal, it’s unlikely Jones will get the deal he’s seeking.

The Falcons train of thought could be that they want to spread their money out to other key players to stay in Super Bowl contention. To them, Jones has his money, and they will deal with Jones when the time comes.

But whether Jones wants the Falcons to take care of their laundry list in order or deal with him now, will be interesting to see play out this summer. Either way, nobody wins when the family feuds. Jones may want to cut his losses while he can and show up for camp.
