2019 NFL Draft: 5 players Colts could take in Round 1

The Colts aced the 2018 NFL Draft by selecting Quenton Nelson in Round 1. GM Chris Ballard needs to hit another home run in 2019.

The Colts were one of the NFL’s most surprising teams in 2018 and their draft class was a big reason why. Both Quenton Nelson and Darius Leonard turned in Pro Bowl caliber seasons as rookies. Indianapolis will want to find another franchise cornerstone late in this year’s first round.

One downside to the team’s success last season is they won’t have a high pick to work with this year. Barring a trade, the Colts won’t go on the clock until No. 26. Remember though, Leonard was a second round pick last season. Chris Ballard’s front office is certainly capable of drafting big time talent late on Day 1.

The two most obvious areas of need for the Colts are finding a No. 1 wide receiver for Andrew Luck and strengthening their secondary. Expect Ballard to let value drive his selection more than need. If those two things intersect at No. 26 it will be a perfect storm for the Colts, but they won’t pass on a player they rate highly just because he plays another position. Without delay, here are five guys who could end up becoming the Colts’ first round draft pick.

5. Deandre Baker

If Baker is still on the board at No. 26 he’ll be very difficult for the Colts to pass up. Adding a cornerback who should be able to start right away would be an ideal selection for Indianapolis.

In particular, Baker’s competitive nature could add a much-needed edge to coach Frank Reich’s secondary. The unit was a little soft last year and it really cost the Colts when they matched up against high-octane opponents. Drafting one of the SEC’s top cover guys from last season could really help Indianapolis when next season’s playoffs roll around.
