Derrius Guice’s legal troubles go beyond domestic violence allegations
Guice was accused of domestic violence by his girlfriend, of which he allegedly attacked three times earlier this year, including a case of strangulation. Dealing with a PR crisis of their own, he was promptly released by the Washington Football Team. Guice is a former second-round pick out of LSU, and after initially showing some promise in his rookie campaign, he’s been plagued by injuries and off-field issues. He was scheduled to fight for the starting job with the likes of Adrian Peterson, Peyton Barber, J.D. McKissic, Antonio Gibson and Bryce Love.
Instead, Guice was cut and went unclaimed on waivers due to the allegations against him, which now include reckless driving.
Guice’s latest run-in with the law is another strike against him
NFL teams are rightfully cautious when handing out second and third chances. The talent has to justify the means, and with Guice still in the midst of legal trouble — including his latest arrest — it’s unlikely he gets picked up anytime soon.
Guice was caught going 95 MPH in a 55 MPH zone by Dulles airport in Virginia. His court date has been set for Sept., but this remains the least of his concerns. The domestic violence allegations bring with them a possible five-year prison sentence. Per his then-significant other, the events began on Valentine’s Day and continued through that April. In two of the incidents, Guice allegedly pushed the woman to the ground, while in the other he forcefully put his hands around her neck and strangled her.
While Guice has denied all allegations against him in a statement through his lawyer, he’ll have his day in court.
