Patrick Mahomes is expecting his first child, but he already knows who he won’t be giving babysitting duties to.
2020 has been quite the year for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He helped lead the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl victory in 50 years, he signed a record-breaking $500 million contract extension this summer, and proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Brittany Matthews, during his Super Bowl ring ceremony. Things got even better on Tuesday, as Mahomes and Matthews announced that they are expecting their first child.
A full day after the couple’s announcement, the 2018 NFL MVP was asked during a press conference who he thought was the best babysitter and uncle in the Chiefs’ locker room. Mahomes answered by saying backup quarterback Matt Moore was best suited for the job because he was responsible…unlike tight end Travis Kelce, who was lightheartedly thrown under the bus.
Mahomes jokingly calls out Kelce after the baby news
Of course, Mahomes’ remark to Kelce was all in good fun. Come on, have you seen the relationship these two have had, especially when celebrating their AFC and Super Bowl championships this past year?
Mahomes and Kelce were properly acquainted with each other during the 2018 season, after the Chiefs traded away Alex Smith to the Washington Football Team to make way for the 2017 first-round pick to start. In their first season together, Mahomes targeted Kelce 150 times, where he recorded 103 receptions for 1,336 yards and 10 touchdowns. Last year, the two played all but two games together due to a knee injury by Mahomes, but it netted them their first Super Bowl win in their first-ever appearance.
This year, Kelce has caught 21 passes from Mahomes for 227 yards and two touchdowns.
It’s obvious that Kelce is going to be the fun uncle once Baby Mahomes arrives. However, the tight end shouldn’t be expecting any phone calls to babysit, based off the MVP-winning quarterback’s answer.
