Can Anthony Brown help maligned Dallas Cowboys secondary?

Through four weeks, the Dallas Cowboys defense has been abysmal. Now, help is on the way ahead of their Week 5 matchup.

The Dallas Cowboys are used to succeeding through the first month of the regular-season. But 2020 has been rough for the ‘Boys, as they hold a 1-3 record entering Week 5. They can take solace in the fact that they’re half a game behind the Philadelphia Eagles (1-2-1) for first-place in the NFC East, but their start has been unacceptable. This poor can be attributed to their brutal, no-good, terrible defense. Luckily for them, help is on the way.

According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys activated cornerback Anthony Brown from the team’s injured reserve on Saturday, putting him in line to play against the New York Giants on Sunday.

Brown brings stability to a brutal Cowboys pass defense

Brown played in Dallas’ season-opener against the Los Angeles Rams, where he logged 73 snaps in that contest. During the game, Brown picked up a rib injury that he attempted to work through ahead of Dallas’ Week 2 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. However, the cornerback’s ailment didn’t get any better throughout the week and was subsequently placed on the injured reserve the day before the contest.

The Cowboys had a ton of faith in Brown. After the team lost Byron Jones in free agency to the Miami Dolphins, the Cowboys gave Brown a three-year, $15.5 million contract to stay put in Dallas. In 2019, Brown played in nine games, where he allowed 15 receptions on 25 attempts from opposing quarterbacks for 167 yards and zero touchdowns.

Dallas is in desperate need of Browns’ presence. Fellow cornerback, Chidobe Awuzie, is on the team’s injured reserve due to a hamstring injury, forcing the team to start Jourdan Lewis and second-round pick Trevon Diggs. Through the first four weeks of the season, the Cowboys have allowed the tenth-most passing yards per game to opposing quarterbacks (258.0) and a the third-highest quarterback rating in the NFL (114.3).

Brown has a favorable matchup in his return, as he faces off against a Giants team that ranks dead-last in total offense (278.0 yards/game).
