Darren Woodson dishes on Cowboys’ Super Bowl hopes, Dak Prescott

Dallas Cowboys’ great Darren Woodson talked to FanSided on Friday afternoon about the team’s Super Bowl dreams and what they should do with Dak Prescott.

Can the Dallas Cowboys win the Super Bowl this season? One of their former great thinks so.

Darren Woodson, a 13-year NFL veteran and three-time Super Bowl champion with the Cowboys, sees the potential within this iteration. Dallas is currently 5-3 and leading the NFC East by a half-game over the Philadelphia Eagles.

“I think this team personnel-wise has the personnel to challenge for a Super Bowl,” Woodson said. “…If you ask the Cowboys and Jason Garrett he’s talking about the NFC East. Win the division first. You have to take care of the Eagles, the Redskins and the Giants. Take care of business this (upcoming) weekend and I think things will fall into place for this football team. But they have to win this weekend against the Vikings.”

Of course, one of the looming questions with Dallas centers on its quarterback. With Dak Prescott in the final year of his rookie pact, owner/general manager Jerry Jones and son Stephen need to either make a long-term play or likely use the franchise tag come February, tying up valuable cap space in 2020.

Woodson believes the right move for Jones and Co. would be to sign Prescott instead of risking the disaster of being stick without a real option under center.

“My question would be ‘what are your options?’” Woodson asked. “Honestly, I’ve been on that team when we were in quarterback purgatory when Troy Aikman retired. It took us forever to find a guy like Tony Romo that could carry the franchise  once again. What are your options? It’s hard to find a top-tier quarterback in this league. Do you bring in Cam Newton? Again, what are your options? The going rate for a quarterback is 34, 35 million dollars. And someone will surpass him again. (Patrick) Mahomes will surpass him the following year.”

Woodson, 50, is long retired from both football and his post-career job as an NFL TV analyst. Now, he’s working in real estate while partnering with Crown Royal on their Crown Royal Purple Bag Project.

In honor of Veteran’s Day and ahead of the most generous time of year, Woodson and Crown Royal are inviting fans headed to the Cowboys game this weekend to participate in the project, where they will have the chance to assemble care packages for veterans and active duty service members overseas.
