Patrick Mahomes says Chiefs offense is back and working

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense are ready to run it back in 2020.

Patrick Mahomes led the league’s most devastating attack in 2019 and, in a stark warning to the rest of the NFL, said he and the Kansas City Chiefs offense are already preparing for another Super Bowl run in 2020.

Responding to a report from NFL Network’s James Palmer that the Chiefs were working on convening for informal workouts “sooner rather than later,” Mahomes posted on Twitter: “We have been back and we have been working.”

Though it is not clear how many other teams have managed to get together for some offseason work amid the coronavirus-enforced shutdown of team facilities, the prospect of the Chiefs getting a jump on the rest of the league is a frightening one.

As they demonstrated with their three double-digit comebacks in the playoffs en route to Super Bowl LIV glory, the Chiefs have the offense to turn any game on its head in the blink of an eye.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are back working

In 2019, Kansas City’s attack finished third in Football Outsiders’ DVOA, which measures efficiency by comparing success on every single play to a league average based on situation and opponent.

Only the Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys were superior in that regard. However, the Chiefs played two games of the regular season with Matt Moore at quarterback.

With Mahomes playing a full season in an offense that has been bolstered by the addition of running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire — a supremely talented runner and pass-catcher — in the draft, the Chiefs’ attack has the artillery to get even better in 2020.

By working out even in an informal manner at this stage, Mahomes and the Chiefs are maximizing their hopes of that scenario coming to pass. Kansas City was already the favorite for 2020, but Mahomes’ words should put the league on notice that the Chiefs are taking no chances as they prepare to run it back.
