Aaron Rodgers signs historic extension right before the beginning of the season.
If you were hoping there was a chance Aaron Rodgers would ever quarterback your team in the future, you can kiss that hope goodbye. After rumors of an extension being in the works throughout the offseason, Rodgers has finally struck gold. Rodgers inks the largest extension in NFL history, 4-year, $134 million with over $100 million guaranteed right before the season gets set to kick-off.
As it stands, Rodgers now has six years remaining on his contract. However, the extension will keep him in Green Bay for many years to come and will likely see him finish his career in a Packers uniform. He’s noted his desire to — like Tom Brady — play well into his 40s.
Several dominoes have fallen into place in order for this deal to get done. Other NFL quarterbacks — such as Matt Ryan — have signed their extensions already. This laid the basis for how much Rodgers will now be making in comparison to the rest of the league. He ranks amongst the top quarterbacks, so getting a record deal is no surprise. With an abundance of players making more guaranteed money nowadays, Rodgers getting more than $100 million —although absurd — is not surprising. The announcement of his deal comes days after Odell Beckham Jr. agreed to a massive extension with the Giants.
Although Rodgers has faced some injuries in the last few seasons, he’s remained a top-two quarterback in the NFL. He’s heading into his 11th season as a starting quarterback, 14th overall, but still feels like he has a lot left in the tank — even at 34. Rodgers is a six-time Pro-Bowler and two-time First-Team All-Pro. Over the course of his starting career, Rodgers has thrown 312 touchdowns to 77 interceptions. He’s also thrown for over 38,500 yards in total.
Rodgers is an exceptional talent, sure, but one question still remains: Will Rodgers go down in history as the best quarterback to ever lead the Packers by the time his career is over? It’s sure shaping out to be that way.
