Retired All-Pro running back Brian Westbrook thinks his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, have a good shot at walking away with the Lombardi trophy again.
After retiring from the NFL in 2010, Brian Westbrook still bleeds green for his Philadelphia Eagles. Westbrook knows that teams like the Saints, Packers, Rams and Falcons will be coming for the crown in the NFC, but deep down he still thinks the Eagles will repeat as Super Bowl Champions.
“There’s so many qualified teams in the NFC, but my heart says the Eagles definitely have an opportunity to repeat,” Westbrook said.
According to Westbrook, the Super Bowl hangover that plagues teams year after year won’t faze the Eagles. Despite the defending champion tag, Philadelphia is returning several key players who were injured for the Super Bowl. If all goes well, particularly for Carson Wentz, the Eagles are built for a back-to-back run.
Westbrook never won a championship in the league, and he felt a mix of emotions when the Eagles hoisted the championship trophy last year. Westbrook was part of the Eagles team that went to the Super Bowl in 2004, riding a 13-4 record, only to lose to the New England Patriots 24-21. That game is something Westbrook still thinks about to this day.
“I wish I could go back to 2004 and do some things differently to help our team win,” Westbrook said. “Of course when your organization finds a way to win I was happy for the guys, but also a little jealous because I didn’t get it done when I was playing.”
The Eagles may be Westbrook’s Super Bowl pick, but when asked which quarterback he’d want under center for him, he picked the man that beat him in the Super Bowl, Tom Brady. But not to worry Eagles fans: Wentz is still in Westbrook’s top five.
Westbrook is also partnering with FedEx at the BMW Championship this week at the Aronimink Golf Club in Philadelphia, where he’ll be delivering tickets to fans at the tournament for the Eagles’ season opener against the Atlanta Falcons Thursday night.
