Jaguars can’t afford Leonard Fournette to be injured

If Leonard Fournette has a significant injury, the Jacksonville Jaguars are in major trouble going forward.

Jacksonville might have the best defense in the NFL. There are stars at every level with Yannick Ngakoue, Marcell Dareus, Calais Campbell, Myles Jack, Telvin Smith, Jalen Ramsey, A.J. Bouye, Barry Church and Tashaun Gipson dotting the depth chart.

However, the NFL in 2018 requires a team to have a potent offense. The Jaguars are in trouble in that regard, as Leonard Fournette has left the season opener against the New York Giants with what’s being called a hamstring injury. At this juncture, his return is being deemed as questionable.

Fournette is the focal point of Jacksonville’s attack, with Blake Bortles at the helm and a slew of unproven tight ends and receivers at his disposal. If Fournette is injured for any length of time — the Jaguars play the New England Patriots in Florida next Sunday — Jacksonville is facing a very tough chore. How do you score points without Marqise Lee and Fournette when the quarterback can’t create any offense on his own?

This also creates a real problem for any of Fournette’s fantasy owners. The Jaguars might want to be cautious with Fournette even if he’s not hurt badly, limiting his carries or holding him out for a game or two. If that’s the case, how do you determine what to do with the former LSU star?

Hopefully Fournette returns to the lineup after halftime and all is good and well. If not, the Jaguars are going to be in a tough spot without their 1,000-yard running back from a year ago.
