5 candidates for Broncos’ head coaching vacancy

After yet another disappointing season, the Broncos have ousted Vance Joseph and the search for his successor has begun.

Mike McCarthy

Mike McCarthy will be a name discussed by just about every team looking for a head coach in 2019. Much of the attention McCarthy is going to get will be based on his winning pedigree. In his 13 years as head coach in Green Bay, McCarthy went 185-35-2. He made the playoffs in nine of those 13 seasons, including a stretch of eight straight seasons from 2009-2016.

The Vance Joseph experiment flopped in Denver, as the Broncos went out on a limb to hire a guy with no previous head coaching experience. John Elway may go for the surest thing, which in this case may very well be McCarthy. He has a long track record of success and has a Super Bowl victory under his belt.

Teams may shy away from McCarthy, though, after the way his tenure in Green Bay ended. He was fired 12 games into a disappointing season in which the Packers were 4-7-1. Many people criticized McCarthy’s handling of a talented team in a good situation — particularly with Aaron Rodgers. McCarthy and Rodgers’ relationship was a power struggle, each side wanting to assert its dominance.

If teams can get past the sour ending in Green Bay, McCarthy’s winning history may be the most attractive on the market.
