Former Broncos head coach, Gary Kubiak, aims to return to NFL sidelines as he interviews with the Jaguars for their offensive coordinator position.
Denver Broncos former head coach, Gary Kubiak, plans on returning to the sidelines in 2019 after a brief two-year stint away from coaching. According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, Kubiak is scheduled to meet with the Jacksonville Jaguars and discuss their open offensive coordinator position.
The Broncos appear willing to let Kubiak walk away from his senior personnel advisory role to pursue coaching gigs. Denver had considered bringing Kubiak back onto the coaching staff but ultimately decided to go in a different direction when the former head coach approached the team about bringing back some of his ex-assistants.
Kubiak and Jacksonville appear to be an ideal fit, as the team looks to continue the focus on a heavy rushing attack to set up a play-action passing attack. What’s also intriguing about this potential union is Kubiak’s familiarity with a quarterback the Jaguars will have their eye on this off-season.
The Baltimore Ravens are poised to move on from their former starting quarterback, Joe Flacco, and the Jaguars are reportedly one of his potential suitors. Kubiak and Flacco previously worked together during the coach’s one-year stint as Ravens offensive coordinator in 2014. Flacco posted a career-high 27 passing touchdowns under Kubiak that season and could look to rekindle that same success as he looks to reignite his career.
Kubiak possesses a vast and successful coaching tenure in the NFL. The 57-year-old began his career coaching the San Francisco 49ers as the quarterbacks coach in 1994 later becoming the Broncos offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach the following year. Kubiak then took the Houston Texans head coaching position in 2006 and spent eight seasons with the franchise before becoming the Ravens offensive coordinator. He returned to Denver in 2015 as head coach, winning Super Bowl 50 with the franchise.
Kubiak stepped down as Broncos head coach after the 2016 season due to health issues and has been serving in a senior advisory role ever since. Kubiak finished his head coaching career with a record of 82-75 (52.2 winning percentage).
Jacksonville aims for an improved offense in 2019. Kubiak has proven to be a successful offensive-minded coach in years past, and this hire could rejuvenate a talented team back to title contention. It’ll be interesting to see what he brings in his potentially hiring.
