Sean McVay finally ready to unleash Todd Gurley on the Patriots

Todd Gurley hasn’t seen a ton of action in the playoffs thus far, but Sean McVay expects that to change in Super Bowl LIII.

The Los Angeles Rams managed to overcome both the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints to reach Super Bowl LIII, but they pulled it off without heavy contributions from Todd Gurley.

Instead, much of the Rams’ ground attack has been falling on the shoulders of newcomer C.J. Anderson, who really jumped into the spotlight during their two playoff games.

Gurley only carried the ball five times against the Saints in the NFC Championship Game — though he did score a touchdown — while Anderson had 17 carries.

It has been assumed that Gurley isn’t 100 percent healthy, having missed the team’s last two regular season games with knee inflammation.

But Gurley is arguably the most dominant running back in football. Head coach Sean McVay is well aware of that, and as the Rams head into Super Bowl LIII against the New England Patriots, he expects to use Gurley much more and to let him make an impact on the game.

“Todd’s healthy and he’s feeling good,” McVay said, via NFL.com. “He sure looked pretty healthy on that touchdown run where he ran through guys and demonstrated some explosion and what we know about him. More than anything, I’ve got to get him more opportunities.”

If Gurley is back to 100 percent health, and McVay truly plans on unleashing the MVP candidate in the Super Bowl, then Bill Belichick’s defense will have its hands full. When Gurley is on his game, he’s nearly unstoppable, as he rushed for 1,251 yards this season — third most in the NFL.

With Tom Brady on the other side, the Rams will have no choice but to score a ton of points in order to beat the Patriots. A big game from Gurley would be pivotal in doing that.

“He didn’t have a lot of opportunities to play much better,” McVay said of Gurley’s performance in the NFC title game, “so I think that’s where I’ve got ownership in that as well, and the great thing about it is he’ll get a chance to make a big-time contribution and have a big-time role in our game against the Patriots.”
