Defensive players dominate the 2019 free agent class, which is headlined by a star-studded flock of safeties.
General managers will sift through a plethora of defensive linemen, linebackers and safeties this offseason. The free agent class is loaded with former Pro Bowl, and All-Pro, players at those positions.
However, there is an overwhelming amount of great safeties that will be fielding calls when free agency opens up. Adrian Amos, Adrian Phillips, Earl Thomas, Landon Collins, the list goes on.
Not only are the bulk of those names proven starters, they are also entering the prime of their careers. Thomas will be 30 years old when the 2019 season kicks off. Phillips, Amos, Collins, Lamarcus Joyner, Tyrann Mathieu and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix will all be 28 years old or younger when they suit up for Week 1 next season.
Cutting the check for players of this caliber at such a young age won’t be a problem for teams. And, the list of players above are safeties that will take any defense to the next level.
The safety position has always been an important one, but that importance has grown even larger in today’s NFL. Players at either free safety or strong safety are now being asked to move around from nickel cornerback to linebacker.
Most of these safeties have the versatility in their arsenal, so it will end up becoming a bidding war for the team who wins their services. But, with so many big-name safeties looking for new homes in free agency, who are the top five?
