The Saints will approach this year’s draft with one simple goal. They want to find talent that can help Drew Brees win another Super Bowl.
Fans in New Orleans may still be lamenting the injustice that cost their beloved Saints a chance to win Super Bowl 53, but Sean Payton and company can’t afford to live in the past. The franchise’s front office and coaching staff are already hard at work preparing for April’s draft.
Everything the Saints do this offseason will be designed to help Drew Brees win another title. The 40-year-old signal caller is still playing at an incredibly high level, but he’s going to regress at some point. New Orleans wants to try to keep his window for contention open for as long as possible.
That’s precisely why they will enter the 2019 NFL Draft short on picks. The Saints don’t have a selection in the first, third or fourth round due to previous trades designed to help them win immediately. On the plus side, they do have extra picks in the sixth and seventh rounds. It’s possible that will help them upgrade their first selection if the right player is on the board.
In this piece we’ll walk you through a full seven-round mock for the Saints. We start with a guy who could be a real weapon for Brees.
Round 2: Bryce Love
Mark Ingram is ticketed to leave in free agency which leaves an opening in the Saints’ running back room. Alvin Kamara is one of the best backs in the NFL, but it’s important that New Orleans avoid running him into the ground early in the season.
The gamble with Love is that he tore his ACL back in December so he won’t be ready to go until the middle of training camp. Payton and the Saints can afford to exercise some patience here. The reality is that if Love were entering the draft process healthy, he’d have a chance to be a first round pick.
When you watch his college film you see a player capable of hitting big plays. He also looks like a running back who can be productive in the passing game. He’s the ideal player to take some pressure off Kamara in The Big Easy.
